How to Read a Black Seed Oil COA or Laboratory Report

Short answer

A Certificate of Analysis is only useful if it identifies four things: which batch was sampled, when it was analysed, by which method, and by which laboratory. Those fields are what connect a result to the bottle in your hand. A COA that reports impressive numbers but names no batch proves nothing about what you are buying.

What a certificate is and is not

A Certificate of Analysis records what a laboratory measured in a sample. That is a narrower claim than most product pages imply. It is not a licence, not a quality rating, and not a statement about the brand. It is a measurement record for one batch.

This matters because "COA available" has become a marketing phrase. A seller can hold a genuine certificate for a batch pressed two years ago and still say it truthfully. The certificate is only evidence about the product you are buying if the batch on the paper matches the batch in the bottle.

The fields to look for, in order

Sample or batch identifier
The single most important field. It links the report to a production run. If it is absent, stop here — nothing else on the page can be tied to your purchase.
Date of analysis
Composition changes over time. A dated report tells you which moment the figures describe.
Analytical method, per parameter
Thymoquinone is quantified by chromatographic analysis; other parameters use their own methods. A result without a stated method has no stated tolerance and cannot be reproduced.
The laboratory
Who performed the work, and whether they are independent of the seller. Accredited laboratories generally issue a report number alongside their name.
Result and unit
The measured value with its unit and, where relevant, the limit of detection or quantification. "Not detected" is only interpretable if you know the detection limit.

Reading the result lines

Most confusion happens in the results table. Three conventions are worth knowing:

  • "ND" or "not detected" means the parameter was below the method's detection limit — not that it is absent in an absolute sense. The limit should be stated nearby.
  • "<" values report that the true figure lies below a threshold the method can resolve.
  • A specification column, where present, shows the range the producer set. A result inside it means the batch met the producer's own target — which is not the same as meeting a public standard, because for black seed oil there generally is not one.

Questions worth asking a seller

  1. Can you send the certificate covering the batch that would ship to me?
  2. Which laboratory issued it, and are they independent of you?
  3. Which parameters were tested for this batch, and which were not?
  4. What is the batch code, and where does it appear on the bottle or packaging?

A seller who can answer all four quickly is running batch documentation properly. Hesitation on the fourth is common and worth noting: batch traceability only helps a customer if the customer can find the code.

Frequently asked questions

What does a COA actually prove?

That a specific sample, drawn from a specific batch, produced specific results on a specific date using a specific method. It does not prove anything about other batches, and it does not certify the brand as a whole.

What should a legitimate laboratory report contain?

A sample or batch identifier, the date of analysis, the analytical method for each parameter, the reported result with its unit, and the identity of the laboratory that performed the work. Reports issued by accredited laboratories usually also carry a report number.

Does every batch COA have to include the same tests?

No, and few do. Testing scope varies by batch and by what the producer commissioned. A report covering only thymoquinone is not defective; it simply covers one parameter. What matters is that the report does not imply tests it did not perform.

Is a COA without a batch number still useful?

Only as general background. Without a batch identifier there is no way to establish that the analysed oil and the oil you receive are the same production run.
